Self-Control

762

The word used by Paul for self-control conveys the sense of keeping something in check. Like keeping a dangerous dog under control, so we are to keep our sinful nature in check. There is a battle within which continues until we are taken up into the Lord's presence. From our sinful nature, there are various manifestations of an absence of self-control. We may be given to sudden impulses, anger, idleness or inordinate affections and interests. Others are mastered by addictions such as to alcohol or pornography. In other situations self-pity or a tendency to despair shows a want of self-control and self-discipline.

We must resolve not to tamely surrender to these temptations. We must not get comfortable with our sins, nor think that previous defeats mean we will fail again. We need to be prayerful, trusting in the power of Holy Spirit and reading Scripture to gain insight from examples like Job and the apostle Paul.
