The Edges of His Ways

Job compares the petty counsel of his friends to the infinite wisdom and power of God. He reviews the works of creation with awe and wonder, and he concludes that even the greatest examples of God's works are the mere 'edges of His ways.'

Verses 1-10
Job felt the sting of bad counsel devoid of God's truth and compassion. We are reminded that true comfort comes through the truth of Scripture (Rom 15:4), and good counsel will contain divine compassion (2 Cor 1:3,4).
Job turns from his friends' shallow counsel and dwells on the might of God revealed in the creation and preservation of the world. He stands in awe of God's works, as only a man of faith can do.

Verses 11-14
These verses picture the power of God displayed in the world of nature and in the defeat of evil. Job takes comfort in the fact that Satan is a vanquished enemy.
Whatever we may know of God's power and wisdom, we only see the edges of His ways and hear only a whisper of His will. Even His greatest works are but a slight revelation of the full scope of His power and wisdom. The inscrutable depth of God's power and wisdom is an inducement to us to live godly in Christ Jesus (Rom 11:33-12:21).
