Forsaken By God

107

The terrible agony that Christ endured on that first Good Friday made it look like a disaster from all outward appearances, but the results that followed revealed the reality of the triumph and the victory of the cross. As one commentator noted, "It cannot be too strongly emphasized that the cross is the instrument and point of victory, not the point of defeat which has to be reversed on Easter morning." The physical agony that Jesus endured was only the tip of the iceberg, the greater part of his agony was spiritual.
Specifically, the agony of being forsaken by his Father as he took upon himself our sin and our curse. In other word, as He experienced hell.

A list of results enumerating the benefits of the crucifixion could be long. But we should note that Jesus was cursed, so we could be blessed. He died that we might live. He was separated from God, so we could be reconciled to God. He descended into hell, so that we might ascend into heaven. He who knew no sin became sin so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
