The Feast of Unleavened Bread

173

Last time in our text in Exodus we opened up and looked at the tenth plague. First, its announcement in Ch 11:1-10, but also its manifestation in Ch 12:29-30. In between the last plagues announcement and manifestation, there’s Ch 12:1-28 and the institution of the Lord’s Passover. Unlike the other nine plagues where the Lord separated His people from the plagues effects, this plague will be different. This plague, the death of all the firstborn in Egypt, will need a sacrifice to save the firstborn of God’s people and specifically the need for the lamb’s shed blood to be applied to the doorposts of each Israelites house. Lord willing, we’ll open up this section in two separate meetings. First, exploring the meaning of the Lamb and the sacrifice’s meaning. God gives Moses specific qualifications as to how the Lamb was to be selected, killed, its blood applied to the doorposts, and the manner in which it is to be eaten. But further in verses twelve and thirteen we see the outcome to come. The LORD declares to Moses 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man, and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. There’s deep meaning in the substitutionary sacrifice of the lamb. An innocent lamb and its blood that covers the Israelites and their firstborn the night the tenth plague struck Egypt.
