Election

The doctrine of election is the teaching about God’s choosing of His people even before He created the world. God’s election is a part of the order of salvation, which is discussed in this lesson as the “ordo saludis.” Some people mistakenly think that the doctrine of election (God has chosen them, therefore why do we need missionaries?) defeats the need for missions. On the contrary, God has chosen His people from among all the peoples of the earth, but He has also chosen to call them to Himself through the ministry of the preaching of Jesus Christ as our only means of salvation. One is required to understand election from both its eternal and its current aspects. God’s people are chosen from all eternity, but effectually called by the Holy Spirit during their lifetime, most commonly through the preaching of the Gospel - the great, good news of Jesus Christ.
