Is God Really Angry?
Series Topical Survey of Romans
I - Is God Really Angry?
Yes, He is!
a) The motion in the language:
The ongoing unveiling of God’s wrath (Apocalipsis)
From heaven -> the place of God’s dwelling
b) The Subject:
The wrath of God. I do not have the language or the mind to abstract the meaning of this concept.
God’s passionate abhorring, His hot displeasure and His ultimate rejection of the ungodliness of people.
All of this coming from an infinite being.
c) God’s Wrath is Provoked
Watson’s illustration of the bee’s honey versus the sting
By ungodliness: disregard for what is good / irreverence
By unrighteousness: disregard for what is right
d) The Effects of ungodliness and unrighteousness.
Suppressing the truth in unrighteousness
A nautical term: to maintain course or steer in a certain direction
In context, to purposely steer against the truth.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed… against all ungodliness & unrighteousness
II - Why?
a) Because of Truth-Suppressing unrighteousness
19-because that which is known about God is evident.
20 For since… creation … His attributes have been clearly seen
…so that they are without excuse.
b) Because of Arrogance-Driven Rebellion
21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God
22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,
23 And exchanged the glory of … God for an image
III – God’s Anger shown in a Terrible Consequence
24 Therefore God gave them over
25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie,
and worshiped the creature rather than the Creator
