Parable of the Grain of Mustard Seed

With each new parable, our Lord would declare the great mysteries of His Kingdom; mysteries, which would be kept hidden from those who are strangers to God's saving grace, yet revealed unto those who have received a work of grace in their hearts.

These mysteries are to help the true believer understand the great blessings and spiritual riches of Christ's Kingdom. A Kingdom 'not of this world, nor one which cometh by normal observation.'

In this parable, our Lord would describe how His Kingdom might at first appear to be small and weak (like a grain of mustard seed, the least of all seeds), yet, when it is grown, it is the 'greatest of all herbs.' This great mystery was revealed in Christ's incarnation, when He came into this world as a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, yet whose Kingdom has now reached the far corners of earth.

It also describes the work of grace in the heart of every true believer. It may appear at first to be weak and small, yet it will grow and it will be a great work.

God's people, especially those entrusted with the preaching of the Gospel, should acquaint themselves more with these great mysteries; for in doing so, we shall be better preaching of such 'unsearchable riches.'
