The Covenant of Works / part 2
Series Temple'trick Spring Conference
235
The doctrine and its implications today:
- The fact of the covenant of works - some biblical references.
- The meaning of the covenant of works - only insisted upon following the fall to convince men of their remaining obligation to obey God, the ensuing penalty of disobedience and their need of the covenant of grace. Man is no longer able to 'do and live' as the covenant of works requires.
- The implications of the covenant of works.
i) our entire understanding of the work of Christ is at stake.
ii) the language of salvation is at stake - the necessity of retaining the biblical language and conviction of Christ's penal substitution and satisfaction which alone answers all the demands of the covenant of works.
iii) the doctrine of justification alone at stake - 'Federal vision theology' confounds the antithesis between law and gospel, works and faith. - The evangelical and experiential significance of the covenant of works.
