Be Sober and Watchful

365

Hugh Binning, a Scottish professor and pastor, was a prodigy of learning whose ministry burned short but bright. The following was originally delivered as a series of three sermons on 1 Peter 4:7, and is taken from his Complete Works. It is useful teaching for believers of our day which answers the question, ‘Given the shortness of time remaining before our Lord returns, how should we conduct ourselves?’ Binning answers, with lives that abstain from intoxication by worldly pleasures, being modest and moderate in our walk, so that we may remain serious and steadfast, wakeful and watchful—all of which facilitate prayer. “But the end of all things is at hand, be you therefore sober and watch unto prayer.” 1 Peter 4:7
