Liberated from Captivity

In recent weeks during our series on Luke we have heard numerous warnings from Jesus including: the need to be diligent and ready for the coming of the Son of Man; the judgment to come upon those deserving of it on that day; and the division brought about by Jesus' presence and proclamation. It is important to note that these warnings are declared in the context and proclamation of the kingdom of God where there is never wrath without the offer of mercy, never judgment without the promise of hope. It is the good news of the kingdom of God, declared in the power and presence of the King, Christ Jesus himself, which brings about the division and judgment we have heard of. This is clearly demonstrated in this week's passage (Luke 13:10-21) where a woman is graciously delivered from the bondage of a disabling spirit, yet the rulers of the day are indignant because Jesus did such a work on the Sabbath. The kingdom of God is among them, but those who do not receive the King are threatened by his reign and rule, fearing that their own 'kingdoms' and authority are at risk. All of us are prone to such a response as this, but thankfully, the King is gracious and patient.

Jesus has come not to condemn the world, but to save it. Those who reject him and his word in the end, will be rejected by him, but those who receive him as King will be given the freedom and glory of the kingdom of the God. What we see in Luke 13 is just a taste of things to come - one day there will be full healing and glorious liberty for all who seek the kingdom of God. What a day that will be!
