Is Britain a Christian Country?

Britain's Prime Minister, David Cameron, recently wrote an article in which he said British people should be more confident about the nation's status as a Christian country.

Predictably, the reaction from the secularist camp claimed that the UK was now largely a non-religious society.

So is Britain is a Christian Country or not? What should the response of Bible believing Christians be to such claims and counter claims?
