The book of First Samuel records the period of transition of the nation of Israel from a theocracy to a monarchy.

The man Samuel is one of three central figures who was unique as as Israel's last judge who also served as a prophet and a priest. Saul and David will be the two other key individuals in this book.

The book opens by introducing the parents of Samuel and gives the account of his birth.

Points to ponder from this study include:

  1. God is sovereign in the painful difficulties of our lives.
  2. God may even use people to add to our difficulties.
  3. The pain and affliction is not necessarily aleviated in times of worship.
  4. We should turn to God in our distress - pouring our soul out to God.
  5. We shouldn't take it personally when we are misunderstood.
  6. We need to bring our burdens to the Lord and then leave them with Him.
  7. We must keep our commitments.
