Spiritual Warfare - Lesson 13 - Learn to Discern - Part 1 - Hebrews 5:11-14. Discernment is not a gift, it is a skill to be learned and developed through use. In fact, a lack of discernment is a sin (Rom. 1:31). So what is discernment and how do we learn to discern? Discernment is the ability to know the difference between good and bad, right and wrong, the sound and unsound. In the Old Testament it is referred to as "understanding." In the New Testament it is spoken of as knowing the difference between sound and unsound doctrine, recognizing the differences between the truth and a lie. Spurgeon famously said that discernment was the ability to know the difference between what is right and almost right.
