An Edifying Example (1) - Timothy

241

This message was given by Pastor Jonathan Stobbs as he continued his evening ministry in Paul's Epistle to the Philippians. Why did Paul mention Timothy in these verses? He is a great example to us as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. As Pastor Stobbs explains, 'Paul then introduces the example of Timothy. He does so in a practical measure for the Philippians, but also for future readers to heed this example. It s fairly clear that nothing challenges the heart as the faithful example of others. This passage gives a further example of someone who lived a sacrificial and submitted life, that was totally committed to Jesus Christ. He would do this no matter what the cost. Sadly, it seems as though many of the Christians at Rome had little concern for the situation at Philippi. Timothy's example is helpful to us, as it would be easy to say of Paul's example that it is too hard to follow because he was an apostle. Certainly, it is too hard to follow the Lord as Paul is explaining in these verses as, well, the Lord Jesus Christ was the Son of God. Yet, Paul says, look at these men, they are ‘ordinary saints', they are normal men, who are extraordinary because of their submitted and sacrificial lives. This calling to walk in the ways of the humble servant is not for the chosen few. Rather it is the path that we need to walk in the light of the Saviour's example.' Are you ready to follow the Saviour irrespective of the cost? Timothy was!
