Giving God his due

The Pharisees, exposed by Christ's parable, send men to lie in wait to catch him in his words. To do this, they ask a question: "Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" Christ's answer rises to a different plane, as he presses upon them the righteousness of submission to Caesar in his appointed sphere, and to God's in his. An answer that leaves his enemies dumbfounded leaves his disciples instructed with regard to our lives before God and men.
