The Death of the Cross

This message was given by Pastor Jonathan Stobbs as he continued his evening ministry in Paul's Epistle to the Philippians. Why is Christ the supreme example of humble living? A very clear answer points to the cross. In this message Pastor Stobbs unravels the death of the cross, and reveals that what Paul is pointing to in this verse is that the cross was the ultimate sacrifice. Nothing compares with the suffering of the Saviour in the darkness of Calvary. Pastor Stobbs speaks of the fact that the death of the cross was a humble death, an obedient death, a perfect death, and an excruciating death. When we see the cross in the light of this verse, we should never be swelled with our own pride, but rather be willing to spend and be spent. As Pastor Stobbs states, 'Paul is insisting that the Lord Jesus Christ, the One whom we serve – because He has so wonderfully served us – made Himself of no reputation, becoming a slave, and then completely humbled Himself by obeying His heavenly Father and dying – dying the repulsive, revolting death of the cross, reserved for public enemies and dregs of the criminal justice system. Paul is using the language to shock. The Lord of Glory died on a cross!' A challenging message that points to the cross, that points to the Saviour.
