John opens his gospel with a grand display of who Jesus was and is. He uses the word "Word" to impress upon his hearers that Jesus was the greatest communication of who God is, because He is God. But this Word did not shy away from coming to earth and taking on human flesh. He was going to display God's glory, grace and truth. He was going to show forth who God is.
