The Need for Exhortation

The writer to the Hebrews brings his letter to a close, he writes, "But I urge you, brethren, bear with this word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly" (13:22). All through this letter the author has done three things that define the primary reponsibility of the pastor-teacher: 1) Read the text; 2) Explain the meaning: and 3), Offer an exhortation based upon that meaning. All three are necessary for the equipping, edification, and maturation of the church. Over the next 12 days we will examine the 12 exhortations in this letter, which begin with, "Let us." This will help solidify in our minds and hearts what the Holy Spirit is saying in this very important letter to the church, today.
