Atheism (Psalm14)
Series Psalms
Psalm 14
'Fool' is associated with silly behaviour, not being intelligent, or not acting according to one's age.
I. The essence of folly (14.1)
A. What is a fool? The Hebrew word is nabal (See 1 Samuel 25)
B. David is not being offensive. (Matthew 5.22).
C. What then is David's complaint? The 'no God' approach of the Atheist is a moral and spiritual disaster.
II. The universality of folly
A. The assessment is God's. (14.2) (Isaiah 6.1-3).
B. By God's standards we are all found wanting. (14.3) (Romans 3.11-12).
C. Our case is hopeless but for grace. David accepts there are 'righteous' people (14.4-5). How can this be? (14.6) (Psalm 46.1-5).
III. The only answer to spiritual folly
A. The prayerful sigh (14.7a).
B. The full assurance (14.7b).
Conclusion:
Ask yourself the question, Am I still a fool?
(Song 2.11-13).
