Lord's Day 1 marks a new start in the Catechism. The question is often why do we use the Heidelberg Catechism as a guide to the scriptures, if it is not the word of God? This is logical, however, the Bible is not a textbook of theology, although it is the foundation for our faith. The catechism provides a succinct summary of the Bible and the doctrines contained therein. The Catechism provides references to all of the scripture used for a basis. The Catechism also applies the scriptures from a personal perspective and gives a summary of the complete Council of God. This 1st Lord's Day gives a complete summary of our faith and salvation.
