What is Forgiveness?
Luke 17:1-20

When everything in you wants to point a finger, hold a grudge and remember the pain, God wants you to lay it all aside.

Forgiveness is the act of setting someone free from an obligation to you that is a result of a wrong done against you.

Forgiveness involves three elements: an injury; a debt resulting from the injury; and a cancellation of the debt.

Observation—the scripture speaks (vs. 1-6)
Verses 3-4—What sin? Forgiveness

Thought: I don't forgive people based upon my appraisal of whether or not they are repentant.

Obedience—illustration (vs. 7-10)

Forgiveness is not based on feelings or faith, but obedience.

Application:

Forgiveness means:

To carry away

    To give a gift

    To loose, free

What forgiveness is NOT:

Approval of the wrong.
Excusing the wrong.
Justifying the wrong.
Pardoning the wrong.
Reconciliation
Repression
Forgetting the wrong.
Pretending we were not hurt by the wrong.

What forgiveness is:

Being aware of what someone has done and still forgiving them.

Choosing to keep no records of the wrong.
Refusing to punish.
Not telling what they did.
Being merciful.
It is an inner condition.
