Not of the World, Pt. 1
Series The Gospel According to John
This chapter uses the word "world" 18 times. Often, the word 'world' is used in stark contrast to the Christian and a few times it simply represents the created world itself (vv. 5, 25).
I. We were chosen out of the world (v. 6, ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου).
Clearly we see the disciples in the world (v. 11) but Jesus declares that His disciples are the ones given to him "out of the world." They were selected; the rest were overlooked, passed over.
II. We are not of the world (vv. 14, 16, ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου).
A. Notice Christ’s description. He says that his disciples are “not of the world” — that is the way He views His disciples. They were chosen out of it and are characterized as not being “of the world.”
B. This is the way we must see ourselves. It is not that we are socially awkward, odd personality, relationally dysfunctional, etc. Not the same thing.
