Playing Church

722 ( 360 | 362 )

Paul likens the Galatians to adults who want to be children. The child who is under the authority of governors and tutors is really no different from the servant, even though he is the heir. Once the child is grown he is free from this authority and becomes responsible for himself. It is strange indeed for the adult to seek to forsake this freedom and return to the authority of the governors and tutors. But this is exactly what the Galatians were doing by going back under the law. They are adults who are returning to the most elementary teachings rather than accepting responsibility for themselves. Christ has purchased for the saint a vibrant relationship. We relate to God, not through keeping of the law, but as children, in whom the spirit cries Abba Father. Why then do we then return to the weak and beggarly elements? Why would we want to seek self-righteousness when we have His righteousness. Why would we want to play Church rather than enjoy the real thing? Let us enjoy the freedom offered us by grace! Let us approach God in a new and living way!
