Railway Rescue Granville

103

God places His people in all walks of life. Today I am speaking with Gary Raymond who is a retired Chief Inspector of the NSW Police.

Whilst Gary was in the Police Force in Australia he joined the Police Rescue squad where he was involved in 1500 rescues. One of the major rescue scences that Gary attended was the Granville Train Disaster which happened on the 8th of January 1977.

It was the worst Rail disaster in Australian history. Locomotive 4620 with 8 passenger carriages had set off early in the morning from Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains and its destination was Sydney.

The train derailed at Granville, a Sydney suburb and ploughed into the supports of an overhead bridge bringing the bridge down on some of the passenger carriages.
