Meet The Prophets

505

Why study the Old Testament?
  - “For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God” – Acts 20:27
  - “…the scroll of the book it is written of Me…” – Heb. 10:7
  - We will be the better equipped to enjoy the New Covenant ministry & it’s blessing
  - The New Testament contrast the Old with the New Covenant (2 Cor. 3)
  - Because of what has been inspired, namely, “All Scripture is inspired by God…” (2 Tim. 3:15-17)
  - Because of its Christo-centric nature, as Jesus Himself described (Luke 24:13-35, 27)

3 Things Common To All Prophets
  1) They Have A History That Unlocks Their Ministry (Jer. 1:1-3)
     - They were inspired of God (2 Pet. 1:20)
     - Jeremiah was dealing with the sin of syncretism (mixing worship of the true God with false gods)
  2) They Had A Divine Calling (Jer. 1:4-8 | 1 Cor. 1:26 | Heb. 11:32-38)
     - They preached in and out of season (2 Tim. 4:2)
     - They had a special message for God’s people
  3) They Had A Theological Message (Jer. 1:9-10)
     - The importance of having God’s perspective on issues
     - God put His words in their mouth (Deut. 18:18)
     - Jeremiah didn’t just speak to politicians but also religious leaders (Jer. 1:11-19)
