Identifying an elder involves a man's own internal conviction and the church's own external recognition.

The internal conviction results from an assessment that is humble and honest, deliberate and prayerful, and searching and careful.

The external recognition is the outcome of an assessment that is careful and congregational, faithful and prayerful, and righteous and reasonable.
