A Ransom for All

Having clearly pointed out the exlusivity of Christianity in verse 5 of this passage (there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus), the apostle Paul now tells Timothy how our salvation was procured. This Man, Christ Jesus, "gave Himself a ransom for all." Why was this ransom necessary? To whom was it paid? Was it really paid to procure the salvation of all without exception?
