The Triumphal Entry of Christ - Rejoicing & Weeping
Introduction
• A Time of Rejoicing & Celebrating (Zechariah 9:9; Luke 19:38)
• Not of the Multitude was rejoicing (Luke 19:39)
I. Sorrow & Weeping in the Midst of Rejoicing and Celebrating (vs. 41-42, 44b)
A. Jesus Weeps over the City of Jerusalem (v. 41)
- Jerusalem described as the “joy of whole earth” (Psalm 48:1-2)
- Jeremiah Wept over Jerusalem (Jeremiah 9:10-11)
B. The Reason Jesus Wept over the Lost Souls of Jerusalem (v. 42, 44b)
• The Rejection of Jesus Christ as the Coming Messiah and the Message of His Salvation & the Everlasting Spiritual Kingdom He came to Establish – Unrepentant & Rebellious Hearts (Deuteronomy 5:29; Ezekiel 18:31-32; Isaiah 64:6; Luke 17:7-10; Psalm 49:7-9; Romans 8:7; Romans 5:1; 2 Timothy 4:2-4)
II. Jesus Wept over the Soon Destruction of the City of Jerusalem (vs. 43-44)
A. The Jewish Historian, Josephus, Describes the Destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 - by Jesus some 40 years before and the fulfillment of that destruction described by Josephus (vs. 43-44a)
B. All because They Did Not Know the Time of Their Visitation (v. 44b; 1 Corinthians 2:8)
Conclusion and Application
• The Triumphal Entry of Jesus Marks the Beginning of Victory and Life for Those Whom He Ransomed on the Cross; Death to all who Reject Jesus Christ & His Work on the Cross; We rejoice in the Former and Sorrow in the Latter (Romans 9:1-5; 1:18; Isaiah 57:21)
• This is the Day of Visitation in Preaching of the Gospel – Do you Know This? (John 3:18; Romans 8:1)
