Christian Applies to Join the Church

We catch a glimpse of 17th Century British ecclesiology in this section. The Palace Beautiful is the church. Christian now applies for membership in the non-conformist church -- and what we see is an interview, conducted by Piety, Prudence and Charity (who are given feminine personalities by Bunyan for literary purposes).

What we find is Christian giving his testimony of salvation, the testimony of his personal life, and the testimony of his family life. Much of the story of Pilgrim's Progress is recapped in this section.
