The Agony of Jesus Christ in Gethsemane

67

In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was deeply grieved and distressed at the prospect of the cross. Why? He knew it was coming from before the foundation of the world. This was the plan from the ages. Not only was he aware of the plan, He had willingly chosen this path, saying that no one took His life from Him, but that He willingly laid down his life of His own accord. Furthermore, He was determined to go to Jerusalem where He would suffer. He told His disciples several times that it would happen and He rebuked Peter -- "Get behind Me Satan" -- when Peter tried to talk him out of his sufferings. So, why was Jesus suddenly so troubled in the garden? This is the question we explore in this sermon.
