SUMMONED TO MOUNT ZION, PART 3
TEXT: Hebrews 12:18-29

SUMMARY: In this passage, Paul uses the language of a journey and an arrival at a destination to admonish his hearers to make the right choice lest they fall into judgment.

I. MT. SINAI: THE LONG ROAD BEHIND THEM (vv. 18-21).
― As a means to accomplishing His plan of redemption, had brought them out of Slavery; given them His laws; brought them into Canaan, defeated their enemies before them, and preserved them to the birth of their Messiah in the fulness of time, and the establishment of the New Covenant church.
― He did not do all this for them to remain spiritually at Mt. Sinai, whose provisions were merely material, not spiritual, and law, not gospel.

II. MT. ZION, THE GLORY ALL AROUND THEM (vv. 22-24).
A. Characteristics.

  1. The "place."
    ― "Mount Zion."
    ― "The city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem."

  2. The inhabitants.
    ― "An innumerable company of angels" (v. 22).
    ― "The general assembly." (v. 23).
    ― The "church of the firstborn," (v.23).
    ― "whose names are registered in heaven."
    ― "To the spirits of just men made perfect" (v. 23).

  3. The sovereign ruler: "to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant."

  4. The means of entry: "the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things that that of Abel."
