Following Jesus - Part I

Some military recruiters are a close second. They must satisfy "commission mission," which means their performance is determined by the number of people they're able to recruit. As a result, they want to make the military sound as attractive as possible. You can imagine the strong temptation for them to lie.
Jesus is the opposite. You'd almost think He didn't want them following Him, because He made it sound very unattractive.

Day 1: Read Luke 9:57-62, 14:25-32 In what way(s) is Jesus different than military recruiters? In what way(s) are some churches like military recruiters? Examine yourself. Why are you following Jesus? Consider the last time you shared the gospel with someone. Did you explain what it means to trust Christ and to follow him? Did you 'water it down' at all? ("it" = life as a disciple of Christ)
Day 2: Explain the tension between belief as "easy" and following Jesus as "hard". What does "following Jesus" mean, practically? Identify 2-3 specific examples from the last few days or week that demonstrate you follow Jesus, rather than this world and/or your own desires. Consider the people you know who are not yet believers. Why do they not follow Jesus?
Day 3: How did Jesus respond to the man who said he would follow Him wherever he went? Why did Jesus respond this way? Examine yourself. Have you made rash vows to do something for the Lord, or to 'follow Jesus wherever He goes'? What desire(s) prompted your vow? Are you following Jesus now? Why? What specific things have you forsaken to follow Jesus? What have you not yet forsaken in order to continue following Him?
