We read in the book of Genesis of the transformation of Jacob to Israel. It is one of turning from a supplanter, deceiver into a prince with God. If we are to truly have fellowship with God their must be a continual turning (repentance) toward Him and away from self (who we where and the ways that was inherent in us.
