I. What this Passage Cannot Mean
A prominent theme in Philippians is “be likeminded”.
This passage can not be referring to false teachers.
II. Paul Comforts them with the truth of God's Absolute Sovereignty v. 12-14
A. God is in control of how, when and where the Gospel goes forth v. 12
B. By God's Providence, the Palace Guard was exposed to the Gospel v. 13
C. In spite of persecution, the Gospel is being boldly declared by others v. 14
III. In Regards to those who are Preaching the Gospel v. 15-18
A. Some are sincere
B. Some have improper motives
Envy v15-- State of ill will toward someone because of a real or presumed advantage
Strife v. 15 -- Conflict and rivalry. Usually it is verbally expressed.
Selfish Ambition (contention) v. 16 -- The desire to be better than someone else
Not sincerely v. 16 – not without moral blemish
Adding affliction v. 16 -- Trouble involving direct suffering. Persecution.
Pretense v. 18 -- pretending
