The Life Of John Owen 3 of 6 - 'That Prince Of Divines Among English Dissenters,' Writes The Reformed Presbyterian, David Steele

401

David Steele, in his classic NOTES ON THE APOCALYPSE calls John Owen 'that prince of divines among English Dissenters.' Owen was one of the most famous Puritans, possessing towering intellectual abilities and keen insights into the spiritual battles of the Christian life. A staunch defender of the Regulative Principle of Worship, he also left the world an important legacy of notable, and sometimes unsurpassed, Christian literature. Nevertheless, his confusion regarding church government (while he leaned toward Independency), his unfaithfulness to the Solemn League and Covenant (which he swore at Fordham), his tolerationism, etc., marred an otherwise productive life as a minister of God.
