I. What We Know to be True (vs. 18-20)

A. What the person born of God knows concerning himself in contrast to the world (v. 18-19) – Five Truths:

1. Does not sin (v. 18a; 1 John 3:6, 9)
2. Keeps Himself (v. 18b; John 3:19-20; 1 John 1:8-10; 2:1; 2:5; 4:12; 2:3ff; 3:24; 5:3; 2:4, 20-23, 27; 4:6; 5:6-10; 1:6; 2:5-10, 29; 3:5, 7, 24; 5:2-3; John 17:5; Romans 8:32; Ephesians 1:13-14; Jude 24; Ephesians 2:8-9; Philippians 2:12-13, 1-5, 10)
3. The Wicked One Does not Touch Him (v. 18c; 1 John 1:1; Job Chapters 1 and 2; Luke 12:5-5; 2 Corinthians Chapters 4 and 11; Ephesians 6:16)
4. Of God (v. 19a; 1 John 5:16)
5. Not under the Sway of the Wicked One (v. 19b; 1 John 5:4-5)

B. What the person knows concerning Jesus Christ (v. 20)

1. The Son of God has Come (v. 20a)
2. Has Given Us an Understanding (v. 20b)
   a. Know Him Who is True (v. 20c)
   b. We are In Him who is True (v. 20d)
   c. This is the True God and Eternal life (v. 20e)

II. A Commandment the Flows from What we Know (v. 21)

• “Do I know with unwavering knowledge as it is revealed to us in God’s word the five truths concerning all who are born of God are true of me?”
