A heart full of anger

40

Anyone here have a bully growing up? Someone who for decades now you have held a grudge against because of what they had done to you or that you think they had done to you? Have you ever had a problem with someone who said they would do something for you but yet never did even to this day? Here in our text Jonah had a problem with the people of Nineveh. They were the sworn enemy of the Israelites. They had been cruel, bullies even. And the last thing Jonah wanted to do was to help them in any way shape or form. But that wasn’t what God had in mind. Back in chapter 1 He had sent Jonah to go and preach the need for repentance to Nineveh. Jonah however decided to hold onto his anger and run from God’s will rather than try to help his enemy. He carried a heart full of anger and refused to lay it down. So much so that even after God showed him mercy and gave him another chance to go an preach repentance to Nineveh he did it grudgingly and only spoke of coming destruction leaving the people to figure out on their own how to repent. While he did he was fuming at his fortune, boiling with frustration, and fighting God the whole way. He was so focused on self he couldn’t see the freedom from his burden.
