"The Two Shall Become One Flesh"

The question of divorce and remarriage was just as troublesome and important twenty centuries ago as it is today. In fact, divorce had been an issue for God's people since Moses led Israel out of Egypt. The first century Jews were divided on this question, most embracing an "easy divorce" view, while a significant minority accepted divorce only on the grounds of marital unfaithfulness. When questioned about divorce by the predatory Pharisees, Jesus responded by holding up God's textbook on relationships, laying the foundation for marriage, underscoring the seriousness of divorce, and demonstrating concern for the peace of God's people.
