Created in Christ Jesus for Good Works

33

If as Isaiah 64:6 says, our own righteousness can only be compared to filthy, disgusting rags, if even our very best works are defiled and mixed with much weakness and imperfection, how can we even speak of good works at all?
The text that we read from Ephesians 2 is certainly not the only thing that Scripture says on the subject of good works.
The writers of the Confession note approximately 85 different passages in seven sections on the chapter of good works.
I think we can say, though, that Ephesians 2:10 is an excellent summary of this subject.
How can a believer who is still troubled by sin and many imperfections do anything that a holy God would consider good?
The only suitable answer is that a believer enjoys union with Jesus Christ.
From the words of Ephesians 2:10 – we have been created in Christ Jesus for good works.
This is the heart of what we will consider.
It is your union with the Lord Jesus Christ that is the only basis for any good work that truly would be counted as pleasing before a holy God.
I am going to summarize a few other important points related to good works, but our focus today will be on our union with Christ – created in Christ Jesus for good works.
