A Coal From The Altar To Kindle The Holy Fire of Zeal

174

Samuel Ward was a Suffolk Puritan who ministered in Ipswich for thirty years. Well-known for his boldness, he was imprisoned in 1634 for his criticism of the Church of England’s missteps. This sermon, which was delivered to an assembly of ministers, is an attempt to kindle holy zeal among the lukewarm, perfunctory believers that tend to typify churches that are not careful to keenly maintain the holy ardor that our glorious God so appropriately deserves. Based on the letter of Christ to the dull-hearted Laodiceans (Revelation 3:14-22), its message befits us all. “Be zealous.” Revelation 3:19
