Salvation Is By Works Alone
Series The Mystery of Godliness
We are grateful for another opportunity to come to the Lord's Table. As we prepare our hearts to come to the Supper, I want to open up a theme in which we will see God's glorious salvation for His people. The title of this sermon may perplex some people, but that is actually good, because it will really help me to make my point. Since we emphasize so much that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone (rightly so), we can tend to forget that our salvation is actually based upon works. That is, God will not accept any sinner unless he/she has flawless righteousness and perfect forgiveness. So, in this sermon I hope to clear up three fundamental misconceptions about works. Virtually all people embrace these misconceptions, whether they are religious or not. Following that I want to establish the truth about works, and why the believer's salvation is actually based upon works – not ours, of course, but rather the works of Jesus Christ instead of ours. Grasping these truths should demolish any lingering “works mentality” in the heart of the Christian. Moreover, it should convince the unbeliever that their works are absolutely futile.
