Nineveh was the greatest of the capitals of the ancient Assyrian Empire, which flourished from about 800 to 612 B.C. It was located on the left bank of the Tigris River in northeastern Mesopotamia, (Iraq today). God called Jonah to preach there and tell the people they has 40 days to repent. Jonah at first refuses, but after spending time in the belly of a great fish he obeys. The people of Nineveh repent and turn to God. About a 150 years after the revival, Nahum was the prophet of Nineveh's doom.
