Responding to Jesus: Discipleship's High Cost

"What must I do to inherit eternal life?" The man who asked this question had everything going for him. Youth. Ambition. Wealth. Influence. Morality. Yet none of those achievements assured him that he possessed eternal life. "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus' answer shocked him, and still shocks selfsatisfied people today: "… come, take up the cross, and follow Me." Mark 10:21 (NKJV) The call to follow Jesus is costly. Repentance is nothing less than the destruction of competing idols – money, status, self-sufficiency – that we might love God above all else.
