Doing What God Requires

Moses was indeed a great man of God, but here we see that God deals with him in a rather surprisingly severe and dramatic fashion. What can the explanation possibly be, for God acting in the way that He did towards His chosen servant. Are there parallels with us today? What lessons can we learn?
