Divorce and Remarriage

John the Baptist told Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife," and he eventually lost his head for it. John apparently didn't know that OT moral law wasn't supposed to apply to a Gentile like Herod. John apparently didn't know that laws should be kept out of the bedroom. John apparently didn't know that if Herod didn't believe in God's law, then he didn't have to abide by it. John apparently didn't know that Herodias was unhappy with Phillip and that her needs weren't being met. John apparently didn't know that a divorce certificate dissolves marital vows and creates a do-over, allowing one to throw away one marriage and start another without consequence. John apparently didn't know that the laws of men are what really count, such that if men give you permission to do something, then it doesn't matter whether God does or not. What we see is that men hate the message of repentance. They hate the seventh commandment. They hate being told what they can and cannot do, especially in the bedroom. They think that is their private life and it is none of any preacher's business. They hate prophets. They hate it when prophets refuse to take their cues from the public opinion polls and the immoral trends of the day. They hate it when preachers won't bless their sin and rubber stamp their wicked behavior with a yellow "Smile, God loves you" happy face.
