Reasons for a Trespass Offering

The next type of offering that God described for Moses to declare to the people is the trespass offering. Unlike the burnt, grain, peace and sin offerings which had either no or very general information when to offer it, this passage lists a set of examples where a sin offering is required. Just as the other offerings were picturing specific doctrines like substitutionary atonement and justification, this offering is a picture of sanctification. It is a picture of how Christ is the believer's trespass offering providing restoration and forgiveness for sin in the lives of those who know who God is and yet still transgress.
