Deuteronomy: Choose Life That You May Live

Choose life that you may live (30:19). On the plains of Moab, a new generation of Israelites enter covenant with the LORD to go into the Promised Land and be his people. But total allegiance is required, and failure comes with stiff penalties—a cursed existence and expulsion from the Land. While it becomes clear that Israel will fail (30:1-3; 31:27-29), the LORD promises a Prophet to lead his people who is greater than Moses, and Deuteronomy ends with hope anticipating that greater Moses to come (18:15, 18; 34:10-12; cf. Acts 3:22; Heb. 3:1-6). That Prophet will be the way to eternal life and the only one who can ultimately save us from the covenant curse of the law (John 14:6; Gal. 3:10-14).
