Jesus' Authority Over Nature

Jesus calming the storm is the first of the middle triad of miracles. Each of the next three miracles ends with the response of amazement or fear by those who observe it. The first triad showed us Christ as a compassionate healer, healing those whom society would have counted as of lesser value - a leper, a Gentile, a woman. This next group shows Christ as God who controls storms, is Lord over demons, and forgives sins. The lesson of the first triad is that we should be His disciples because of His compassion. The lesson of this second group is that we should follow Him as our God.
This particular miracle is designed to show that Jesus has control over nature as only God does. The Old Testament specifically talks about God raising and calming storms. Yet, the miracle is revealed only to the disciples. The same sovereign power that raises the storm, and calms the storm, determines to whom the truth is revealed.
