The Meal of Meals

51

Aim: To better grasp the extent of Christ's atonement as it is represented to the church in the Lord's Supper.

Exegesis: The Lord's Supper has a future referent. We will always share it with our Redeemer (vv. 14-16) and with one another (vv. 17-18). The Lord's Supper has a past referent. The cross is the central (v. 19a) and vital (v. 19b) focus of history. The Lord's Supper has a present referent. Christ is our covenantal (v. 20a) and precious (v. 20b) Savior.

Key verses: vv. 19-20 ''And [Jesus] took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, 'This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.' ''
