What's So Golden About The Golden Rule

44

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus listed the moral attributes of his Kingdom. The pinnacle of this his “Inaugural Address” was the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule teaches Christ’s followers to do unto others the things that which you would have them do unto you. Even though many other religions make similar recommendations, Jesus’ teaching bears a fundamental and revolutionary element that separates it from all the others. His command is given in the positive. “Do unto others” is his order. All the others say, “Do not do unto others those things that you would not want them to do unto you.” Christ has raised the standard. Gold is after all, the highest standard. The Golden rule serves as the ultimate basis for social regulation, it measure our conduct and it gives us a guideline to a situation when no other rules apply.
